The hilly state of northern India, Uttarakhand  has  a distinct geography, socio-economic, cultural heritage and different health seeking behavior. To carter to the health needs of the people of the state, often living in remote hilly areas and to promote the medical education of state, Government of Uttarakhand planned to establish a Government Medical College at Dehradun along with two more medical colleges in pipeline. The objective of creating a Government Medical College is to provide cost effective health services to the entire Garhwal region of Himalayas specially the tribal and disadvantage area of the region. As Dehradun is the gateway of the whole Garhwal region of Uttarakhand and as it  receives patients from all the seven districts of the region, a government medical college in Dehradun will not only help the population in the region to have access for quality health care in a subsidized pattern but will also help in rendering quality medical health services for the tribal and backward population of the region. It will produce quality medical professionals, which will help in reducing the gap of trained medical manpower required in the state.
